A condo hotel, also known as a hotel-condo or a Condotel, is a building used as both a condominium and a hotel. 

Condo hotels are typically high-rise buildings developed and operated as luxury hotels, usually in major cities and resorts. 

These hotels have condominium units which allow someone to own a full-service vacation home. When they aren’t using this home, they can leverage the marketing and management done by the hotel chain to rent and manage the condo unit as it would any other hotel room.

Location

While not intended as a complete list, the most popular locations in the U.S. for condo hotels include: Aspen, Chicago, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, the Las Vegas metropolitan area, New York City, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Orlando, Florida. Condo-hotels are also found at ski resorts and international destinations, such as Jaco, Costa Rica. Investors spent an estimated $250 million on condo hotels in 2006, with much of that spending concentrated on resort areas.

Trump International Hotel and Tower (Chicago)

The Trump International Hotel and Tower, also known as Trump Tower Chicago and locally as the Trump Tower, is a skyscraper condo-hotel in downtown Chicago, Illinois. The building, named after real estate developer Donald Trump, was designed by architect Adrian Smith of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. Bovis Lend Lease built the 92-story structure, which reached a height of 1,389 feet (423 m) including its spire, its roof topping out at 1,170 feet (360 m). 

It is adjacent to the main branch of the Chicago River, with a view of the entry to Lake Michigan beyond a series of bridges over the river.

The building received publicity when the winner of the first season of The Apprentice television show, Bill Rancic, chose to manage the construction of the tower.

Trump announced in 2001 that the skyscraper would become the tallest building in the world, but after the September 11, 2001 attacks, the building plans were scaled back, and its design has undergone several revisions. When topped out in 2009 it became the second-tallest building in the United States after Chicago's Willis Tower. 
It is expected to be surpassed by the 1 World Trade Center in New York City in the middle of 2013, and by the on-hold Chicago Spire if completed. Trump Tower surpassed Chicago's John Hancock Center as the building with the world's highest residence above ground-level and held this title until the completion of the Burj Khalifa. It is currently the tenth tallest building in the world.

"The tents were beautiful—true luxury," with handcrafted furniture, mosquito nets, and a hand-hammered copper bathtub—garnering a perfect rooms score. Staff earned a perfect score for "second-to-none service," as did the restaurant Nong Yao for regional and Western cuisines served in a thatched-roof pavilion.

2. Peninsula House, Dominican Republic

"The most luxurious place in the Caribbean"—and the top-scoring property in the Americas—is "a magnificent hillside retreat with a glorious pool and Atlantic views." This two-year-old Victorian-style house is "like a museum," with eclectic art scattered throughout. Suites have Brazilian hardwood floors and antiques such as Chinese bamboo storage trunks and an Indian ivory cabinet. The kitchen makes use of the on-site organic garden. Lunch is served at the Beach Club, a couple of miles from the property (rides there and back are complimentary). "The personal service was never less than excellent."

3. Blanket Bay, New Zealand

This upscale lodge in a perfect-scoring location between the Southern Alps and Lake Wakatipu means "majestic seclusion," with perfect-scoring rooms that have stone fireplaces, recycled timber, floor-to-ceiling arched windows, antler chandeliers, and "very welcoming hot tubs." The menu at the restaurant, "which has wonderful, unique tastes," emphasizes local meats like Canterbury duck leg and Angus beef. Perfect-scoring staff "never miss a thing."

4. King Pacific Lodge, British Columbia

At this floating ecolodge made of pine, cedar, fir, and stone, "all rooms are front-row seats" on the wildlife in the Great Bear Rainforest. Staff exhibit "passion for the ancient values of the Gitga'at people," in a "wilderness made welcoming by the very civilized lodge." Slate bathrooms have soaking tubs, and the "best food ever" includes smoked black cod and grilled coho salmon. The lodge developed mentoring programs with local indigenous communities.

Billionaire Owned Hotels

Hedge fund billionaire Paul Tudor Jones has a penchant for buying plush properties. He owns a mansion in Greenwich, Conn., an apartment in Manhattan, an estate in the Florida Keys and another in Zimbabwe, where he enjoys hunting and fishing.

When he bought a 350,000-acre landscape in Tanzania in 2003, the area had a rampant poaching problem. Jones worked closely with the local African populations to help restore the area's wildlife and create an attractive tourist destination.

Eventually, the problematic plot of land was transformed into a luxury safari experience in the heart of Africa's untamed wilderness.

Today Jones' Singita Grumeti Reserves features air-conditioned tents with other amenities to provide a luxurious camping experience. Guests have the opportunity to dine under the trees while watching the famous wildebeest migration before retiring into exclusive lodges with Venetian mirrors and crystal chandeliers.

Forbes teamed up with the Travel Channel to create a list of the most luxurious billionaire-owned hotels. Jones' Singita Grumeti Reserves and 10 other hotels and resorts will be featured on an episode of Forbes Luxe 11, which debuted on the Travel Channel and Travel Channel HD Saturday, Nov. 21 at 10 p.m. Eastern/Pacific.

Medical-device maven William Cook also made it his mission to restore a problematic locale into a luxurious getaway, spending $450 million to renovate the French Lick Hotel and Casino in Indiana.


Port Ghalib provides three different settings within one resort. The ultra-luxurious 19-suite Intercontinental Palace was designed in the image of an old citadel, offering its guests a feel of being in the 12th century. Las Vegas Strip

The Las Vegas Strip is an approximately 3.8 mi (6.1 km) stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South in Clark County, Nevada. The Strip lies in the unincorporated areas of Paradise and Winchester. Most of "the Strip" has been designated an All-American Road.

Many of the largest hotel, casino and resort properties in the world are located on the world famous Las Vegas Strip. Nineteen of the world's 25 largest hotels by room count are on the Strip, with a total of over 67,000 rooms. One of the 19, the Las Vegas Hilton, is an "off-Strip" property but is located less than 0.5 miles (0.80 km) east of the Strip.

Several decades ago, Las Vegas Boulevard South was called Arrowhead Highway, or Los Angeles Highway. The Strip was reportedly named by Los Angeles police officer Guy McAfee, after his hometown's Sunset Strip.

One of the most visible aspects of Las Vegas' cityscape is its use of dramatic architecture. The modernization of hotels, casinos, restaurants, and residential high-rises on the Strip has established the city as one of the most popular destinations for tourists.

Luxor Las Vegas

The Luxor Las Vegas is a hotel and casino located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada. Ground was broken for the Luxor in 1991, that same year construction began on the Treasure Island. It has a new highly modernized and contemporary design and contains a total of 4,407 rooms lining the interior walls of a pyramid style tower and contained within twin ziggurat towers that were built as later additions. The hotel is named after the city of Luxor (ancient Thebes) in Egypt.

In July 2007, owner MGM Mirage announced plans to thoroughly renovate the Luxor, spending $300 million to remodel 80 percent of Luxor's public areas, removing much of the ancient Egyptian theme and replacing it with more adult-oriented and modern lounges, restaurants and clubs. Among the distinctive changes to the exterior occurred in mid-2007. Around May, management covered one of the pyramid's massive black faces with one 15-story sign that advertised Motorola. Not much later, a sign advertising Absolut Vodka. On June 16, 2008 the sign was taken down.

Underwater Hotels

Some hotels have accommodation underwater, such as Utter Inn in Lake Mälaren, Sweden. Hydropolis, project cancelled 2004 in Dubai, would have had suites on the bottom of the Persian Gulf, and Jules Undersea Lodge in Key Largo, Florida requires scuba diving to access its rooms.


Utter Inn
Utter Inn (Swedish) or in English, Otter Inn, is an art project by Mikael Genberg which offers underwater accommodation to the public. The facility is entered through a typical Swedish red house located on the surface of the water. The only representation of this concept is, at this point, located in Lake Mälaren near the town of Västerås in Sweden.

Hydropolis
The Hydropolis Underwater Hotel and Resort is a planned hotel, designed by Prof. Roland Dieterle which will be the world's first underwater luxury resort. It's situated 66 feet below the surface of the Persian Gulf, just off Jumeira Beach in Dubai. Reinforced by concrete and steel, its Plexiglas walls and bubble-shaped dome ceilings will enable guests to see fish and other sea creatures. It is basically divided into three sections: the land station, where guests will be welcomed; the connecting tunnel, which will transport people by train to the main area of the hotel; and the 220 suites within the submarine leisure complex. It will cover an area of 260 hectares, about the size of London's Hyde Park, and will cost an estimated £300 million. It is self-acclaimed to be a 10-star hotel and will be charging circa $5,000 per room per night.

The hotel was scheduled to open in late 2006; however, due to the engineering and environmental difficulties of constructing an underwater hotel, the project was delayed. Architects working on Hydropolis have had some difficulty selecting a suitable position for the complex, as concerns have been repeatedly raised about the displacement effect of building a 260-hectare underwater structure. If their calculations are incorrect, tides and sea levels off the coast of Dubai could be severely affected, rendering vast tracts of coast uninhabitable due to chaotic tides, flooding, unpredictable wave patterns and a high possibility of whale and other sea-mammal beaching. Disney corporation are reportedly in talks with the developers of Hydropolis to bring a fully underwater production of The Little Mermaid to the hotel's lobby.

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT) is a hospitality ownership, management, and franchise organization based in White Plains, New York. One of the world's largest hotel companies, it owns, operates, franchises and manages hotels, resorts, spas, residences, and vacation ownership properties under its nine owned brands. As of December 31, 2008, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. owned, managed, or franchised 942 properties employing about 145,000 people, of whom approximately 36% were employed in the United States.




History

Starwood Hotels and Resorts was originally formed by the real estate investment firm Starwood Capital to take advantage of a tax break; at the time the company was known as Starwood Lodging. Initially, Starwood Lodging owned a number of hotels throughout North America, all under different brand names. The Westin Hotel Company was purchased in 1994 from Aoki Corporation of Japan. Starwood acquired the Sheraton, Four Points by Sheraton, and The Luxury Collection brands from ITT Sheraton in 1998.


In 1999, Starwood launched their "W" Hotels brand. In September 2005, Starwood announced the launch of aloft, a new hotel brand based on W. aloft Hotels catered toward business travelers. Starwood intends to have 500 aloft hotels worldwide by 2012. In 2005, Starwood purchased the Le Méridien brand, which greatly increased the company's operations in Europe.

The Luxury Collection

The Luxury Collection brand was established when ITT Sheraton purchased the controlling interests of CIGA
(Compagnia Italiana Grandi Alberghi, or Italian Grand Hotels Company), an Italian hotel chain, in 1994 (ITT Sheraton was to one day itself be purchased by Starwood - see above).

ITT Sheraton kept CIGA's original logo (the four horses of St. Mark) for The Luxury Collection brand logo, however as of September 2009, The Luxury Collection no longer uses this logo; each Luxury Collection hotel now uses its own logo.

Hybrid Brands

Some Sheraton and Westin hotels and resorts have their branding 'hybridized' with The Luxury Collection, much to the confusion of many guests. Also joint are Asia's ITC Welcomgroup Hotels, Palaces and Resorts top hotels.

Sheraton Poznań

Many of The Luxury Collection's hotels and resorts pertain to their location or surroundings and vary in age and theme; the 552 room Palace Hotel, San Francisco, California USA was the world's largest hotel, many Luxury Collection hotels were once residencies for European aristocracy and monarchy, for example, Hotel Imperial in Vienna, Austria was once the residence of Prince of Württemberg. Notable guests of Hotel Elephant in Weimar, Germany include Goethe, Liszt, Johan Sebastian Bach and Leo Tolstoy.


In 2004, Starwood's founder and CEO Barry Sternlicht stepped down as CEO to focus his attention on his other firm, Starwood Capital. He remained on the Board of Directors until 2005. He was succeeded as CEO by Steven J. Heyer, and Starwood began selling a number of its company-owned hotels, instead focusing on becoming a management company and franchiser for its current and future hotel brands. In April 2007, Steven J. Heyer left the company on the request of the Board of Directors because of an issue with Heyer's management style and after allegations of personal misconduct.

Chairman of the Board Bruce Duncan served as interim CEO until September 2007, when the company announced Heyer's successor, Frits van Paasschen.

The Doyle Collection Luxury Hotels

The Doyle Collection is a group of luxury hotels previously known as Jurys Doyle Hotels. The collection consists of eleven luxury hotels in six major international cities across Ireland, the UK and the USA.

Re-brand
In December 8, Jurys Doyle Hotels became The Doyle Collection and announced the withdrawal of the Jurys Doyle brand

from the market. This re-branding process involves the renaming and re-launch of each hotel within the group. The re-brand is the culmination of an ongoing capital investment programme of more than Euro 200 million, which involved a complete refurbishment of nine of the 11 Doyle Collection properties, as well as repositioning the hotel group into the luxury hotels category.

History
The introduction of The Doyle Collection marks the next stage in the evolution of the company since legendary hotelier Pascal Vincent Doyle (PV Doyle) opened his first hotel, the Montrose, in Dublin in 1964. In 1999 Jurys acquired Doyle Hotels and became the Jurys Doyle Hotel Group, the largest hotel group in Ireland.

1964: Developer Pascal Vincent Doyle opens his first hotel, The Montrose, in Dublin.

1966: Doyle opens two more hotels in Dublin.

1972: Jurys sells off its properties and reforms as a new company in order to acquire three hotels in Dublin, Cork, and Limerick; Doyle opens Burlington Hotel.

1977: Doyle opens five-star Berkeley Court Hotel.

1984: Doyle moves into London with the acquisition of Clifton Ford Hotel; he also acquires two hotels in Washington, D.C.

1986: Jurys goes public on the Irish Stock Exchange.

1991: Jurys enters the United Kingdom with the purchase of a hotel in Glasgow.

1997: Doyle acquires Dupont Plaza in Washington, D.C., and begins construction on The Washington Hotel (opened in 1999).

1999: Jurys acquires Doyle and becomes Jurys Doyle Hotel Group, the largest in Ireland.

2002: The company begins selling off three-star properties to focus on four- and five-star hotels. In 2002, the company began a shift toward higher-margin properties, beginning a sell-off of many of its three-star locations in favor of refocusing its hotels portfolio around four- and five-star properties. At the same time, Jurys Doyle continued its expansion into the United Kingdom, where the company had targeted some 60 cities as potential future markets, opening the Jurys Inn Croydon in London in 2002 and the Jurys Inn Newcastle and Jurys Inn Glasgow in 2003.

By then, Jurys Doyle had already boosted its number of rooms to nearly 6,500, and its revenues had climbed to EUR 257 million ($303 million). The company had also begun a new expansion drive, with six new properties in development at the beginning of 2004, two of which, the Jurys Inn Leeds and the Jurys Inn Chelsea opened in February and March of that year. Other properties slated for opening included a new hotel in Dublin's Parnell Street, a hotel serving London Heathrow, and an entry into Southampton slated for 2005.

Jurys Doyle also looked forward to its first extension beyond Washington, D.C., in the United States, as it prepared for the opening of the new four-star Jurys Boston Hotel, in 2004. In 2007 The Jurys Inn chain of 20 hotels in Ireland and the UK were put up for sale. Irish real estate investment firm Quinlan Private agreed to buy the 20 Jurys Inn budget hotels for 1.165 billion euros (792.6 million pounds) cash, paying one of the highest premiums for such a chain in recent history.

Future
PV Doyle’s daughters Bernie Gallagher (Chairman), Anne Roach and Eileen Monaghan (Director) remain board members of The Doyle Collection along with Walter Beatty (Director).

Amanwella is situated amidst a mature coconut grove fronting a crescent shaped beach close to the village of Tangalle in southern Sri Lanka. The resort derives its name by combining the words, Aman, or “peace” in Sanskrit, and “wella” in Sinhalese, the name for beach.

All 30 suites are identical in layout and design and fall into two categories based on their location and views. The pool and pool ocean suites are contemporary in design yet blending in local material and styles like the distinctive terracotta roof tiles and hand-hewn stone walls. The suites open on both sides letting in cooling sea breezes. Steps lead to the unique, rectangular 45-metre infinity swimming pool. Overlooking the pool are two large sun terraces with sun loungers. Located in the coconut grove meters from the sea, is the Beach Club, an open pavilion with a wooden deck ideal for lounging and light, informal dining.

Suites, linked by pathways, are interspersed along the hillside to the west of the public areas. Most are within comfortable walking distance and a small resort vehicle is available for transport to the more elevated levels. There are sweeping views of the ocean and the beach, flanked by two rocky headlands. 
 
Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is the sole international airport in Sri Lanka and is located about 30km north of the city. Travel time between the airport and the city centre varies between 45 and 60 minutes. Most international flights arrive in the late evening or early morning. Amanresorts recommends guests commence their Sri Lanka journey at Amangalla, transferring directly there on arrival, a drive of two and a half hours. Amanwella is a two-hour drive East of Amangalla.

Plaza (pronounced /ˈplɑːzə/; Spanish: [ˈplaθa]) is a Spanish word related to "field" which describes an open urban public space, such as a city square. All through Spanish America, the plaza mayor of each center of administration held three closely related institutions: the cathedral, the cabildo or administrative center, which might be incorporated in a wing of a governor's palace, and the audiencia or law court. The plaza might be large enough to serve as a military parade ground. At times of crisis or fiesta, it was the space where a large crowd might gather. Like the Italian piazza, the plaza remains a center of community life that is only equalled by the market-place.

Most colonial cities in Spanish America were planned around a square plaza de armas, where troops could be mustered, as the name implies, surrounded by the governor's palace and the main church.

A plaza de toros is a bullring.

In modern usage, a plaza can be any gathering place on a street or between buildings, a street intersection with a statue, etc.

The Italian cognate is Piazza, the Portuguese Praça, the French Place, the Romanian Piața, the German Platz and the Greek Πιάτσα

First World Plaza is a shopping centre located below First World Hotel, the biggest hotel in Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia. It comprises the hotel lobby for First World Hotel.

It consists of shops, restaurants, an indoor theme park, a cineplex, a Watersplash Pool (an indoor water theme park for children), Genting Sky Venture (a skydiving simulator), a Starworld casino, bowling center, Genting International Convention Center, the Pavilion (for daily night performance show), Haunted Adventure and a Ripley's Believe It or Not! museum. Entertainment-related performances such as dances, acrobatic shows and magical shows are held in an area called timesquare.

Along with First World Hotel, First World Plaza is managed by First World Hotel and Resort Sdn Bhd, one of the companies in Genting Highlands Resort.

The Palazzo (pronounced /pəˈlɑːtsoʊ/) is a luxury hotel and casino resort located on the Las Vegas Strip in Paradise, Nevada, a suburb of Las Vegas. The Palazzo is owned and operated by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. The property's design is marketed as being reflective of a modern European ambiance and luxury living.

The Palazzo is currently the largest building in terms of available floor space in the Western Hemisphere.

Parts of the resort were opened to the general public on December 30, 2007. The official grand opening took place on January 17, 2008.

The $1.8 billion resort features a Lobby where guests from the street arrive beneath a 60-foot (18 m) glass dome with a two-story fountain. Those approaching from The Venetian make the transition through a towering octagonal structure and garden, itself topped by a glass-and-iron dome. Visitors to The Palazzo using the underground parking structure can take elevators or escalators from the underground garage and arrive in the center of the property's casino.

The Palazzo Casino, like some other casinos on the strip, operates under the license of a related casino—in this case The Venetian's license. The resort's 642-foot (196 m) high hotel tower features 3,068 all-suite rooms and 375 concierge-level suites.


The Palazzo is LEED Silver Certified—the largest LEED certified building in the nation.

Currently under construction, the 270-unit condominium tower addition The St. Regis Residences at The Palazzo will be the first residential offerings at The Venetian complex. The high-rise tower is being built on top of the 90,000-square-foot (8,400 m2) building that houses the Barneys New York apparel store. On September 4, 2008, Las Vegas Sands announced that it had come to an agreement with Starwood Hotels & Resorts to operate the condo tower as a signature branch of The St. Regis Residences with all hallmarks of the St. Regis brand offered to residents

First World Hotel is the second largest hotel in the world by rooms. It comprises Tower 1 and Tower 2, each with 28 floors, and has a total of 6,118 rooms. It is one of the five hotels located in Genting Highlands, Pahang, Malaysia, along with Genting Hotel, Theme Park Hotel, Highlands Hotel and Resort Hotel. It was the largest hotel in the world until The Palazzo, an expansion of The Venetian in Las Vegas was opened in January of 2008.

The hotel is managed by First World Hotel and Resorts Sdn. Bhd, one of two major companies operating at Genting Highlands resort (the other is Resorts World Bhd). The resort can be reached by the Genting Skyway, which is the world's fastest (and Southeast Asia's longest) cable car, which travels at 6 metres per second.
